Often Black identity in America is flattened to create a unified notion of Black community. As a consequence, the various class divisions that exist in Black America are obscured to facilitate Black social and political activity being easily governed by the American political establishment. When slavery is discussed, the images of all Black folk toiling on plantations comes to mind. What that image belies is that there have been free Black people, known as free people of color, that have existed in America since the earliest periods in colonial history. Shockingly, it occurred at times that these free people of color even owned their own Black slaves. What was the nature of free people of color societies. How did free people of color function in the antebellum south. How extensive was slave ownership among free people of color?   Warren Eugene Milteer, Jr. Warren Eugene Milteer, Jr. is an assistant professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
