In the light of the public feud between Neil Young and Spotify, many people are leaving the music platform citing it’s contract with podcaster Joe Rogan and his platforming of COVID misinformation coupled with the extremely low royalties rates paid to artists. While this mass exodus of consumers and artists makes for great culture war headlines, it obfuscates a larger issue with the passive way we consume music and the monopoly control over what you hear and how you hear it.   With streaming platforms such as Spotify being one of the main ways for new artists to get heard and attempt to breakthrough for mainstream success, how can they compete against major record label capital and an oversaturated market place that releases 60k songs PER DAY on average? With more musicians finding it more lucrative to create sound libraries to be put in movies and television scores and commercial jingles, writing and recording the next great record could be an antiquated notion. Corporate sponsorship, getting a larger corporate sponsored tour, and even playing corporate sponsored venues is the goal of many artists mainstream and underground alike.
