He fell in love with music shortly after birth and started playing the bass at the age of 10. He moved to Nashville in 1977, and after early gigs with Sleepy LaBeef, Billy Joe Shaver and Guy Clark, joined Don Williams' band. Dave toured and recorded with Williams for 14 years, which eventually led to a freelance career as a studio bassist and independent producer. He has played bass on more than 500 albums with artists like Elton John, Alan Jackson, Keith Whitley, Trisha Yearwood, Earl Scruggs, Emmylou Harris and The Chieftains. Dave has performed live in concert and on television with many major artists such as Steve Winwood, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy, Earl Klugh, and Dr. John. In 1997 Dave was voted ‘Bassist of the Year’ at the Nashville Music Awards. As a solo artist, bandleader, and producer, Dave has released 14 projects on his own label, Earwave. In 1999, he created and hosted the radio series “Nashville Unlimited," for Nashville Public Radio which featured "live in the studio” performances and interviews with a wide variety of Nashville's finest singers, songwriters, and musicians. He has continued that tradition with his annual “Nashville Unlimited Christmas” concert, CDs and radio broadcasts, all of which benefit Nashville’s “Room In the Inn” homeless program, for whom Dave has raised over $100,000 since 1992. A featured columnist for Bass Player Magazine since 1995, Dave has also contributed as a writer to various books about bass playing and the music business. He has had his songs recorded by Chet Atkins, Don Williams, and The Sweethearts of the Rodeo, whose new album he also produced. He remains active as a session player and still plays live gigs around Nashville and tours occasionally with Three Ring Circle, his “jazzgrass” instrumental trio with Rob Ickes (dobro) and Andy Leftwich (mandolin/fiddle). Dave was elected to a three-year term as President of the Nashville Musicians Association, AFM Local 257 in December 2008. He is also a board member of Leadership Music, The Academy of Country Music, Bass Player Magazine and The International Recording Musicians Association. In Dave's own words... "Nashville has the most fantastic creative community in the world and has enabled all my musical dreams to come true. I am committed to doing everything possible to help "Music City" promote its diverse musical heritage and reach its full potential as a worldwide music and media center."
