#202: Setting Boundaries for Better Brain and Emotional Health with Dr. Nicole LePera

Dhru Purohit Show - Podcast készítő Dhru Purohit

At one point or another, most of us have felt broken. We may feel like there is just something inherently wrong with us, that being different is bad, or that we’re not understood or fully seen by our families.  Though it may be hard to believe, we’re not broken, wrong, or bad. We’re us! And this is part of being human. These thoughts and feelings stem from so many places, especially childhood experiences and family dynamics.  Today on The Broken Brain Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Nicole LePera to explore what it means to cultivate self-compassion, access consciousness, and define boundaries so we can feel safe in our own emotions.  Dr. LePera was trained in clinical psychology at Cornell University and the New School for Social Research. She also studied at the Philadelphia School of Psychoanalysis. As a clinical psychologist in private practice, Dr. LePera often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients—and for herself—she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical, and spiritual health that equips people with the tools necessary to heal themselves. She is the creator of the #SelfHealers movement where people from around the world are joining together in community to take healing into their own hands. Her first book, How to Do the Work, was just released. In this episode, we dive into:  -Dr. LePera’s personal experience with anxiety and childhood trauma (6:15)  -Dr. LePera’s "dark night of the soul moment” (10:24)  -How holistic psychology is different from traditional psychology (13:23) -How a lack of recognition of our past can create dysregulation (16:37) -Why our past has a strong grip on us (18:10)  -Understanding that physical and psychological symptoms are messages, not lifelong diagnoses that can only be managed (19:26)  -The importance of cultivating self-compassion for ourselves (27:31) -What consciousness means and how to access it (30:16)  -How to heal your inner child through reparenting (42:53)  -How to set boundaries (47:37)  For more on Dr. LePera you can follow her on Instagram @The.Holistic.Psychologist, on Facebook @The.Holistic.Psychologist, on YouTube @TheHolisticPsychologist, and through her website https://yourholisticpsychologist.com/.
